Special Educational Support (SPS) at ITU

Do you need special educational support (SPS) while studying at ITU?

If you encounter challenges or barriers that relate to an impairment or neurodivergence, you may apply for various relevant support options. 

Special Educational Support (in Danish 'Special Pædagogisk Støtte': SPS) is a system that provides compensatory support for you with either physical or mental disabilities.

The aim is to ensure you the opportunity to undertake your studies on equal terms with other students.

What are the requirements?


The Ministry of Education define these specific requirements:

  • You suffer from an impairment, disability, chronical illness or similar and have formal documentation on the condition, for example from a medical specialist, psychiatrist, hospital or in the shape of a dyslexia test
  • You must be enrolled at a full-degree programme at ITU
  • You must be a Danish citizen, an EU/EEA citizen, or have the same status as a Danish citizen

What kind of support?


The available support depends on your type of impairment.

It may consist in funds for aid tools and software, study support to balance a better study structure, etc.

Examples on conditions & relevant support

Examples of support that may be relevant:

• 20 hours of study support with an advisor at Studenterrådgivningen (SRG)

• A clarification process of further needs for support with an advisor at SRG

• Academic support

• Study mentor

Reading / writing impairments

(e.g. dyslexia)

Examples of support that
may be relevant:

• Dyslexia test, if you are in doubt whether you are dyslexic

• Various IT aids with guided instructions for use

• Study support at KVUC

• Access to NOTA, a library for study materials available in formats so you can have academic text read aloud.

• Test for dyscalculia – if you are in doubt whether you are challenged comprehending numbers.

Brain and neurology

Neurological impairments

(e.g. late complications from e.g. brain damage, concussion or Covid-19)

Examples of support that may be relevant:

• 20 hours of study support with an advisor at Studenterrådgivningen(SRG)

• A clarification process of further needs for support with an advisor at SRG

• Academic support

• Study mentor

• Assessment of needs for physical aids

• Access to NOTA that can help with, among other things, reading your academic texts during your studies.

• Various IT aids with guided instructions for use.

A physical body

Physical impairments

(e.g., disabilities that limit your motor functions, physical diseases, visually or hearing handicapped)

Examples of support that may be relevant:

• Ergonomic chairs and tables

• Ergonomic mice and keyboards and other specially adapted equipment.

• Secretarial assistance

• Practical help

• Digital and/or technical aids

• Relevant programmes and software

How do you start the process?

As soon as you have been admitted to ITU, you are eligible to receive SPS. We therefore encourage you to reach out to us as early as possible.

  1. Book a meeting with the SPS-advisor – either Johanne or Liselotte (see contact details below) 
  2. At the meeting, we will help you get an overview of what you might need or feel challenged by and what opportunities for support can be available.
  3. If you have documentation, bring the documentation of your impairment to the meeting. E.g., medical certificate or dyslexia test.
  4. Together, we fill out the forms and make sure that the right support will be applied for.

Once the support has been granted, usually you don’t need to do further. We will make sure to continue the support each semester.

Do you need to apply for Special Conditions at your Exams?

For some students it is necessary to apply for Special Conditions at the Exams. This may be an option if you struggle with a disability – and need a special set-up to ensure that you are able to demonstrate your knowledge and competences regardless of your given disability.
