Leave of absence

Who can apply for leave of absence?

A student enrolled in a full-time education at ITU can apply for leave of absence due to illness, childbirth, adoption or military service.
We do not grant leave based on other reasons.

  • If you apply for leave of absence due to illness, you can take leave of absence for one semester.
  • If you apply for leave of absence due to motherhood, you can take leave of absence up to two semesters.
  • If you apply for leave of absence due to fatherhood or as a co-parent, you can take leave of absence for one semester.
  • Leave of absence due to military service must correspond to the length of your military service or deployment and follow the semester structure.

If you take leave of absence in the spring semester it will run from 1 February to 31 August the same year. Leave of absence will start from the first day of the semester, or, otherwise, the date of the application. You cannot apply for leave of absence retroactively.

As a general rule, it is not possible to take leave of absence for a part of a semester unless in cases with acute illness where you are reported ill in the end of a semester including the coming semester.

It will usually not be to your advantage to take leave of absence, due to the consequences it has - see for other options

If you take leave of absence, the consequences are:

  • You will not be eligible to receive SU. This includes SU birth grant (fødsels-støtte) in connection with childbirth. You will also not be eligible for additional SU grant portions due to illness if you have been on leave of absence during your illness.
  • You cannot attend classes or go to exams in a semester in which you are taking leave of absence. This applies even if you are only on leave of absence for a part of the semester. Please also note that you cannot attend reexams from the previous semester, if your leave of absence takes place in the reexam period.
  • You cannot be a member of a collegiate board such as The Board of Studies or a Subject Area Team during your leave of absence.
