CCIT Seminar on Producing carbon integrity with Barbara Moraes
Producing carbon integrity: financialization of forest conservation in the Brazilian Amazon
In the aftermath of controversies involving land grabbing, fraudulent contracts, and phantom credits, integrity has emerged as a central value invoked by entrepreneurs, certifiers, and financial actors as a means of resolving the so-called carbon credit crisis. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork following a forest-based carbon project in the Amazonas state, this presentation explores how integrity is enacted as a set of techniques for managing community expectations, cultivating territorial presence, and aligning with global standards and financial classifications. From local negotiations in riverine communities to global debates over certification methodologies, standards and market transparency, integrity emerges as a multi-scalar practice that simultaneously builds business opportunities and reshapes the moral landscapes of conservation practices.
