The hidden disabilities sunflower

ITU is part of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower programme. The initiative allows individuals to voluntarily share that they have a disability or condition that may not be immediately apparent. By wearing the Sunflower, students and employees can signal that they may need a helping hand, understanding, or more time in various settings such as shops, at work, on transport, or in public spaces.

Globally, 1 in 6 people live with a disability, which includes both visible and non-visible conditions. These disabilities can be temporary, situational, or permanent and encompass a wide range of physical, neurological, cognitive, sensory, and chronic health conditions.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower aims to make the invisible visible, acknowledging the diverse access needs and barriers faced by individuals. By adopting this programme, we hope to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.

As part of the programme, Sunflower lanyards and related materials are available at the information desk in the atrium, and further resources can be found on the intranet.

The implementation of the Sunflower symbol is a visible step towards ITU’s broader goal of supporting diversity and ensuring that all members of the university community feel welcome and empowered.
