The short answer to this question is that you do not. Unless you develop your own Large Language Model, you are sharing your information with the company behind your AI of choice.
Therefore, you should always be mindful of what data you are uploading. In some cases, it may be necessary to mask or anonymize personal details before entering them. Pay particular attention to the following types of data:
- Personal Data: Avoid sharing personal or sensitive information. This includes any details that directly identify a person, could be used to identify them, or could be linked with other data to reveal their identity.
- Research & Project Data: Do not input confidential or proprietary information. If your coursework or research involves interviews, company collaborations, or access to sensitive data, ensure that confidential details are not shared with AI tools.
- Original Work & Intellectual Property: It is illegal to upload copyrighted information to any generative AI software. This includes most academic articles and textbooks. Also, be aware that uploading your own work - such as essays, reports, code, creative writing, or designs - may mean you lose control over its use.
Microsoft Copilot and data security
Through your ITU credentials, you have access to the “
enterprise protection” in Microsoft Copilot. While this does provide a higher level of security than other alternatives, it is still not perfect. Therefore, everything above also applies when using Copilot with your ITU credentials.
