How do networks change and why should we care?

How do networks change and why should we care?

Global maritime trade depends on networks of vessels connecting ports worldwide, and disruptions can be enormously costly. When extreme events like storms or conflicts strike, they tend to shut down entire regions simultaneously, yet existing network resilience tools assume disruptions hit ports one at a time or in spatially distributed groups. We develop a statistical method to detect whether network disruptions cluster locally and in bursts. We will apply the method to synthetic and real network data, including maritime networks. The results lay the groundwork for designing shipping networks that can better withstand shocks that hit entire regions at once.

Join us for a Maritime Hub Seminar by Jonas Juul, Assistant Professor, and Ariel Avanzi, Research Assistant, on "How do networks change and why should we care?"

The seminar explores how disruptions such as storms and conflicts can affect entire regions of global maritime trade networks at once. Drawing on synthetic and real network data, including maritime networks, the research develops new methods to understand and improve network resilience.

24 June, 11:00–12:00, 3F07 (Emil Holms Kanal 3). Open to staff and students.
