How to work with feedback in your group

Often among students you need to provide feedback to each other.

Feedback is not just about praise or criticism - it is meant to move your work forward. This is sometimes challenging, as feedback can easily be experienced as personal.

Constructive feedback
To get the most out of feedback, agree on a structure for how you do it.

Start by being specific about what the goal is: What do you want input on?
The more specific you are, the more useful the feedback will be.

Remember these 3 guidelines below:

  • Before you start
Agree on what kind of feedback you need and what can be changed. Share your work in due time and make it easy for others to comment.

  • When giving feedback
Focus on the work/the task and the needs of the person receiving it.
Strive to be specific, explain your points, and invite possible improvements.
Remember how time and effort have gone into the work/the task and how there is a person at the receiving end of the feedback.

  • Why it matters
Working actively with feedback takes time, but it helps you move forward together, avoid misunderstandings, and improve the quality of your work.
