Earlier this year, I shared the priorities of ITU's 2026 DEI Action Plan. As we approach the end of the year, I would like to provide a brief update on some of the initiatives currently underway and how they contribute to a more inclusive environment for everyone at ITU.

One important milestone has been the implementation of ITU’s tenure-track model. The first appointments have now been made, and a dedicated working group is being developed to provide a clear and supportive framework for career development, mentoring, and progression. While this initiative focuses on academic staff, it is also intended to strengthen ITU’s ability to attract and retain talented researchers, contributing to a strong research and learning environment for students.

A key priority for students is the development of a shared Code of Conduct for both staff and students. While student guidelines already exist and current policies address issues such as bullying and harassment, the new Code will provide a broader framework for respectful behaviour across the university community. It will also offer clearer guidance on how concerns can be reported and addressed, helping to ensure that everyone feels safe, respected, and included at ITU. The work will continue into the new year with input from student and employee representatives, management, and relevant committees.

We are also improving access to information across the university. Updated resources are being prepared to provide clearer guidance on practical matters, university procedures, and points of contact. While some of this work is aimed at supporting international staff, the overall goal is to make it easier for members of the ITU community to find the information and support they need.

At the same time, we continue to focus on wellbeing and support. Creating an inclusive study environment means recognising that people have different needs and experiences. Our ongoing DEI efforts include improving awareness of the support and guidance available across the university and ensuring that students can more easily find help when they need it.

Finally, we are working to strengthen awareness and dialogue around DEI through initiatives such as DEI-themed bookshelves and future events that encourage learning, reflection, and discussion across the ITU community. These activities are intended to create opportunities for students and staff to engage with topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in meaningful ways.

While several initiatives are still in development, I am encouraged by the progress made so far and by the engagement across ITU. We will soon begin preparing the next DEI Action Plan, and I encourage you to continue sharing ideas and suggestions through the DEI mailbox. Your input remains invaluable as we work together to make ITU an even more inclusive place to study and work.
