Especially about the Master Thesis

The thesis is a 30 ECTS project, which must conclude your MSc programme.

It is an independent project, which should show that you are able to work with a topic of your own choosing at a high academic level. The thesis is a written submission (either individual or in group) with an oral exam (50 minutes per student incl. voting and feedback).

The thesis is legally founded in the programme Curriculum (‘Studieordning’). Find your Curriculum under Your Programme.

Otherwise, the thesis follows the general rules that apply when writing a project. For information on this, please read about Project work here

Below, you can find more information about what is specific to the master thesis.

When can you start your thesis?

The general requirement is that your thesis must be placed in the final year of your master programme. This means that you must have passed 60 ECTS before writing your thesis.

The details
The master thesis should conclude your study programme and show that you have the required academic skills in applying scientific theories and methods.

Therefore, your thesis ideally should be placed in your 4th and final semester, but sometimes it might be necessary to take any remaining ECTS in the following semester. If possible, you can also register for 7,5 ECTS in the same semester as you write your thesis.

What happens if you have not yet passed 60 ECTS?
If you have not passed 60 ECTS when you register for your thesis, the system will automatically reject your registration. SAP then looks at how many ECTS you are about to pass and will approve the registration if you are registered enough courses/projects to be able to pass 60 ECTS or more at the upcoming exams. Please go to "My Study Activities". to check the status of your registration.

If SAP assesses that you are not in the final year of your master programme, you will not be allowed to register for your thesis.

Please be aware that the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science has made a decision in KEN nr 9953 (in Danish) of 4 October 2024, which establishes that the agency does not have the legal authority to grant an exemption from the rule stating that the master’s thesis must be placed in the final year of the study programme.

Although you can apply for an exemption, please take this decision into consideration before applying.

Abstract

You must include an abstract in your thesis. If the thesis is in Danish, the abstract must be in English. If the thesis is in English, you can write the abstract in either Danish or English.
