Group splits and exams

Can I split from my group?

The group exam format requires you to be in a group
This means you cannot just choose to leave your exam group and continue on your own. That might be possible for the re-exam, but check!

If you experience difficulties within your group, it might be ok to create a new group, as long as all groups still have a minimum of two students.

Always check with the course manager.

Getting support
If you experience controversies and difficulties within the group it is important to reach out.

Check out Working in groups for guidance and support and if you are still in need of help, getting support from the Study and Career Guidance is a great way to hopefully overcome the problems within the group.   

What if you are forced to split?

When you work in an exam group, situations may arise where the group cannot continue together.

A group member is not participating

The group format is often used for exam submissions either with or without an oral exam.

If a student is not engaging in the group work or adding to the group assignment, the student cannot be listed as a part of the group for the exam submission.

That would be exam fraud.

A group member does not attend the oral exam

The group will attend the oral exam as normal. For the student not attending it can be critical if the re-exam still has a fixed group format.

If the re-exam is a group exam the student cannot just re-submit for the re-exam and do an individual oral exam.

A group member becomes ill

Different scenarios can be at stake when working on an exam assignment as a group.

A group member can become ill early on or late in the process and not able to collaborate.

Disagreements within the group

Within the group the group dynamic sometimes becomes a problem.

Different ways of working, diffferent ambitions and problems communicating.

We recommend you reach out as early as possible and get help to move forward. Contact the Study and Career Guidance specifically to get group support.

How to still share your group work

If as a group you have been working on an assignment, but you end up splitting, then you can still use parts of the joint assignment for your new assignment.

In order to not fall for plagiarism you need to submit the old assignment as an appendice and reference it.
