Open Guest Lecture with Claudia Núñez-Pacheco from 15:00-16:00 in Auditorium 3

We make sense of the world through our bodies, and it's through them that we articulate meaning. Following this premise, this talk draws on a decade of research that takes our felt sense seriously as both a site of inquiry and a design material, from artefacts for bodily self-reflection and body-centric methods for articulating tacit and aesthetic experience to poetry and large language models. Along the way, I will discuss methodological contributions and the tensions that arise when somaesthetic design intersects with other design traditions, including AI. In this regard, my most recent work, which bridges somatic practices and LLMs, proposes strategies centred on designing for body-centric temporalities and the diverse manifestations of human language expression. This approach reclaims trust by anchoring our interactions in bodily knowing, opening the door for less data-centric approaches to designing for reflection.

Workshop with Claudia Núñez-Pacheco from 16:00 - 18:00  in room 2A50

This workshop puts the approach presented in the talk into practice. Through a guided somatic exercise and a poetic dialogue with large language models, participants will explore, through different materials, how bodily knowing might inform the design of systems for embodied self-knowledge and reflect on the ethical questions such systems raise. The workshop will make space for dialogue around understanding LLMs through the body and open up the question of what the refusal to LLMs might mean. Participants who want to use LLMs during the workshop should bring a laptop or smartphone with access to a large language model.

About Feminist Technoscience in Practice

ETHOS Lab invites interested students, researchers, and practitioners to take part in a series of events titled ‘Feminist Technoscience in Practice’. The events focus on the practical application of digital and critical feminist methods.

The events are rooted in technical practices but are tailored to accommodate any level of technical experience. Participation is open and free for anyone interested, but registration is required.

About the guest

Claudia Núñez-Pacheco is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology at Malmö University in Sweden. Her research investigates how to design from self to others, including how bodily ways of knowing are utilised as materials for aesthetic experiences in design. She employs introspective and somatic practices to explore aesthetic and generative qualities in our interactions with technology.
