What to do if you experience sexual harassment or sexism at ITU

Any instance of sexual harassment or sexism is unacceptable at ITU.

If you experience or witness sexual harassment or sexism as a student, you are encouraged to contact the university administration.

We are ready to assist you with help or advice on what to do in a specific situation. Your inquiry will be taken seriously and treated confidentially. See all details further below.

Be aware of the distinction made between sexual harassment and inquiries related to discrimination

based on:

  • gender (sexism)
  • age
  • physical ability
  • religion
  • sexual orientation
  • ethnicity
  • national origin

(which is not covered by ITU's sexual harassment policy)

Please refer to the Discrimination - what to do for students at ITU for further information on this process.

Have you experienced sexual harassment?
We encourage you to react if you feel violated. If you decide to share your experience, you need to contact a member of The sexual harassment committee.

What will happen

After having decided to share the experience, the first stages involves only you and a member of the sexual harassment committee. Only later and after having decided if a complaint should be filed, the investigation will involve the accused part as well. See the exact details below.

  1. Step one is an informal confidential conversation between the violated person and a person of choice from the Sexual Harassment Committee.
  2. After the conversation, the violated person decides whether the case should lead to a formal complaint.
  3. If no formal complaint is made, the matter remains confidential between the two parties.

If the violated person decides to file a formal complaint after the initial confidential conversation, the procedure is:

  1. The chair of the Sexual Harassment Committee is contacted.
  2. Based on an assessment of the specific case and the relationship between the parties, the chair decides which member of the Sexual Harassment Committee is to participate in the further consideration of the case.
  3. As soon as possible, and in dialogue with the violated party, the involved members of the Sexual Harassment Committee will try to minimise or eliminate the possibility of a direct relation between the complainant and the accused while the investigation into the case is ongoing. As a student, you might transfer to another course and as an employee, you could report to a different person or change office.
  4. The investigation of a case will partly occur by interviewing the parties and potential witnesses, while third parties can be involved depending on the nature of the case.
  5. Based on the investigation, it is decided how the matter should proceed.

Safety for both parts

All inquiries are taken seriously and handled with discretion. Only as few people will be involved as possible, and both parties will be handled fairly. Please read below for more details on this.

  • All inquiries about sexual harassment are taken seriously and treated with the necessary discretion and integrity.
  • The case is handled in dialogue and collaboration with the violated person and with the involvement of as few people as possible.
  • The violated person is informed of further professional counselling and support.

ITU wants all parties to be treated fairly with the opportunity to explain themselves and have their case investigated thoroughly - thus, a formal complaint cannot be submitted anonymously.

Settling the inquiry

Different outcomes can be the case, since very different scenarios can occur. Professional counselling can also be necessary. Look into the details below.

The consequence for the violator, or the violated party, depends on the severity of the case. Employment or study-related consequences can be considered, just as it cannot be excluded that the case might be reported to the police.

The violated party and, in case of unjust accusation, the accused will be offered professional counselling if necessary, e.g. via Falck Healthcare, to handle any stress which might have occurred in relation to the case.
