Once you have decided to do a project and settled on a topic, you need to find a supervisor. This goes for elective projects, the Bachelor project and the Master thesis.
Who can act as a supervisor
From the employee list, the people holding the following positions can be project supervisors:
- Professors (though not visiting professors)
- Associate professors
- Assistant professors
- Post docs (Also industrial Post docs)
- Research assistants
- PhD fellows (though not visiting PhDs)
- Heads of Departments

When you have found a possible supervisor, you need to contact this person to have a talk about your first ideas for the project, so you can decide if a collaboration is a good idea and if it is possible.
Please be aware of the specific rules as described below, when deciding on a supervisor.
For Bachelor projects and Master theses
All supervisors must be employed full-time as ITU researchers. Part-time lecturers employed at ITU and external lecturers cannot supervise on Bachelor projects or Master theses.
For GBI, BDDIT, DIM, KDDIT and GAMES
Allocation of supervisors for Bachelor projects/Theses
The process of finding a supervisor involves submitting a list of up to three potential supervisors in a prioritized order. The Head of Programme and the Head of Department will then allocate a supervisor based on your wishes and on the availability of the supervisors in question. Getting your first priority is not a guarantee.
Ahead of the allocation process, you will receive an e-mail telling you how to submit your wishes.
GAMES only
Before submitting the list, you will have a chance to talk to potential supervisors at an event hosted in September (you receive an email about this)
When writing in the Spring semester
For the allocation, you must submit keywords and prioritized wishes by October 12, 2023.
When writing in the Autumn semester
If you write in the Autumn semester, you will have to find a supervisor yourself.
When writing in the Spring semester
For the allocation you need to fill out the prioritized list of three potential supervisors by 23 October 2023.
When writing in the Autumn semester
For the allocation you need to fill out the prioritized list of three potential supervisors by 17 April 2024.

When writing in the Spring semester
For the allocation you need to fill out the prioritized list of three potential supervisors by the end of October.
When writing in the Autumn semester
You can either find a supervisor yourself or you can join in on the process running for the Spring semester.
When writing in the Spring semester
You will receive information about your allocated supervisor in November.
When writing in the Autumn semester
You will receive information about your allocated supervisor in June.
In special situations where you struggle to find a suitable supervisor from ITU, you need to consult with the Head of Programme about your situation.
For Projects
Full-time and part-time lecturers employed at ITU can supervise on individual projects without need of approval.
Supervisors who are not employed at ITU
If you want an external lecturer as a supervisor for a project, you can apply to have him or her approved by the relevant Head of Study Programme and Head of Department as well as the Dean of Education, using the application form for an external supervisor.
The deadline for application is Monday in week 4 and 34 for the spring and autumn semesters respectively.
All projects
Hours of supervision
Bachelor / Final Report:
15 hours
Thesis:
30 hours (15 extra hours of supervision are given at both the second and third examination attempt for the thesis)
Individual projects:
7,5 ETCS and 15 ECTS: 5 and 10 hours respectively.
The number of hours given is per project. They include the supervisor's preparation and meetings with the student(s); including the exam. However, you should always discuss mutual expectations for the supervision sessions with your supervisor.
If you cannot find a supervisor for your project
If you need inspiration or you just haven’t been able to find a supervisor you think would make a match, you can try to reach out to your Head of Programme for suggestions. You can also look at the pages about Finding a supervisor in the Study and Career Guidance section for inspiration.
Changing supervisor after the project period has started
You can change the supervisor for your project after the project period has started.
